Since Bengalurians are already feeling heat heat, hydration is important. While ordinary people can consume fluids to keep hydrated, the biggest challenge is for diabetic patients because they cannot drink all fluids like normal people. Dietician of Vasvi hospitals, Dr. T Ramalakshmi emphasized the importance of proper hydration for diabetics. He said, “As a dehydration can cause electrolyte imbalance, acute gastroenteritis, loose stool and even kidney issues. In addition, diabetic patients experience excessive thirst and frequent urination due to polyuria symptoms.”
He said that except for heart patients, diabetics need to consume two to three liters of water daily. “Diabetic patients can consume buttermilk, lime water with salt, and cucumber slices can help maintain hydration. While most fruits should be avoided, watermelons in controlled parts (100–150 grams once a day), oranges, and mosambi are allowed.
What to avoid:
He said, “Jaggery-based drinks due to fruit juice, soft coconut water, and high sugar material. Excessive coffee, tea, and herbal decoction (Kashaya) also needs to be avoided as they can increase acidity. Lime juice should be avoided in hot water; it is best consumed in normal water.”
He said that fenugreek water is recommended, but the seeds should be chewed after soaking overnight, as it contains mucus and antioxidants, making it more beneficial than cumin (cumin) water.
He said that people, especially diabetics, should ensure that there is no dehydration because it can cause fatigue and kidney injury, which can be detected through blood tests. He said, “Diabetic patients should be well hydrated to prevent complications and ensure overall well -being during the summer months. Diabetes can also consume ragi malt mixed with plain water or butter milk.”
