US President Donald Trump has warned that he will impose 25% to 50% secondary tariffs on Russian oil buyers if he believes that Moscow is hindering his efforts to end war in Ukraine, Roots Informed
Talk to NBC News In an interview on Sunday morning, Trump said he was “angry” in Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing disappointment over the lack of progress in the direction of a ceasefire.
Trump’s remarks recently criticized Putin’s Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelancesi, which the US President took a person for his peace efforts.
Trump said, “If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault … then I am going to put a secondary tariff on oil on all oils coming out of Russia,” said Trump.
He clarified that such measures would mean “If you buy oil from Russia, you cannot do business in the United States,” say, “25% tariff on all oil, 25- to 50-point tariff on all oils.” Trump indicated that these tariffs could be implemented within a month.
There was no immediate response to Moscow, although Russia repeatedly rejected Western sanctions as “illegal” and for the purpose of economic gains.
Trump, who weekend in Florida, revealed that he planned to talk with Putin later this weekend. Kremlin has accepted two publicly known calls between leaders in recent months, but indicated that there may be additional discussion. The White House has not confirmed when the call will be or if Trump will also talk with Zelancesi.
Trump has given priority that he says “ridiculous” war, but progress remains slow. Putin recently suggested that Ukraine could be placed under a temporary administration to facilitate new elections – an idea Trump has previously supported.
Trump insisted that Putin understands his frustration, but he said, “I have a very good relationship with me” and that his anger “quickly spreads … if he does the right thing.”
Their threats increased in the midst of an increase in trade pressures including planned duties on imported secondary tariffs on Venezuela oil buyers and planned duties on imports from large trade surplus countries recently. This step can especially affect India and China, both major importers of Russian oil.
Trump also suggested that he could impose equal punishment on Iranian oil buyers until Tehran agrees to stop his nuclear weapon program.
