US President Donald Trump talks to the media at the Oval Office at the White House on March 26, 2025 on Washington, DC, US, March 26, 2025.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would “put 25% tariffs on all cars which are not in the United States.”

Trump said that there is no “tariff” for cars manufactured in the US

The new tariff was cordoned into a presidential announcement, signed by Trump in the Oval Office. They will come into force on 2 April, and “We start collecting on 3 April,” he said.

Trump White House associates Will Sharf said that the new tariffs apply to “foreign manufactured cars and light trucks”. He clarified that he comes in addition to the duties that are already.

Scharf said the tariff resulted in “more than $ 100 billion new annual revenue in the US”

The nuances of proclamation were not immediately clear. Most vehicles are assembled from thousands of parts that can arise from dozens of different countries.

Trump said that there would be “very strong policing”, on which parts of the car have to hit with tariffs.

European Commission Chairman Ursula von Der Leyen quickly criticized the new American tariff and vowed that the European Union would continue to seek solutions to the negotiations, protecting their economic interests. “

He said in a statement, “Tariffs – bad for businesses, worse for consumers in the United States and European Union,” he said in a statement.

After Trump’s announcement, the auto stock fell into an hourly business. Shares of General Motors, Salentis and Ford Motor lost about 5% in all extended trading.

On March 5, Trump gave to the vehicle manufacturers who are known as “Big Three”-a one-month discount from its 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada that follows an existing North American trade deal known as USMCA.

Trump had earlier indicated that new auto tariffs could come before April 2, the day his broad “mutual tariff” scheme is going to start.

He said in a cabinet meeting on Monday, “We will announce soon in the next few days, maybe, and then April 2 will come, it will be a mutual tariff.”

Trump has long indicated his plans to impose heavy tariffs on foreign trading partners. But his unexpected and often shifting policy rollouts have shaken upheaval in the stock market and have given up uncertainty about business leaders planning for the future.

Trump has hypnotized on 2 April as “Liberation Day” and “The Big One”. Their plan, as is originally described, will slap mutual tariffs on all countries that have their own imports on American goods, while other disruptive trade also impose tariffs in response to business policies, such as the use of valuable taxes.

But Trump and his officials have recently suggested that the tariffs coming on April 2 may be soft than the first appearance.

Trump said on Friday that those tariffs would “flexibility”, and on Tuesday night suggested that duties would be “more than mutual”. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said last week that the country could do prior-conversation with the US to avoid facing a new tariff on April 2.
