Kolkata: Angered by a new law on land use, protesters say they say that discrimination against Muslims for police vehicles in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state of India, lost three people after a week of violence on Monday, said officials said.
The unrest began in Murshidabad district, where Muslim protesters set fire to the shopping mall, attacked a Hindu house and stabbed two people on Saturday, police said, officials forced the authorities to suspend internet services in the area.
On Monday, protesters in Kolkata’s Bhanghar area clashed with the police after officials stopped the protest rally. A major highway was blocked by the protesters during the disturbances.
The protesters were angry about a new law passed by the Indian Parliament this month, which makes a comprehensive change in the management of a vast path of the land established fully established for fully Muslim use for probably conscious tension between the government and minority Muslims.
Muslim groups and political parties say that like many policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the law aims to separate and discriminate against Muslims. Modi and officials at his party deny the allegations, and said that the law is “pro -Muslim reform”.
Modi’s party has accused the Trinamool Congress, its bitter opponents who rule West Bengal, to please Muslims to win votes. The Trinamool Congress denied this and said that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is polarizing people on religious lines.
