A Srinagar court Editor-in-Chief of Elle India has issued a pre-comprehensive notice for unknown models, luxury designer pair Shivan and Narash on allegations of hurting religious sentiments during the holy month of Ramadan. The controversy stems from a skivier fashion show held in Gulmarg on 7 March, which marks the 15th anniversary of the designer label.

The complaint was filed under sections 296 and 299 of the Joint Code of India (BNS) and Section 50-AK-A Jammu and Kashmir Excise Act1958, accuses the organizers of displaying improper content that insults cultural and religious sentiments.
Legal proceedings and court stand
Special Mobile Magistrate Faizan-e-Nazar said that before taking cognizance of the case, the accused should be heard according to the legal provisions. The court has issued a notice to call the accused through the registered post, warning that if they fail to appear, the proceedings will continue in their absence. The next hearing is scheduled for April 8, 2025.
Political and public backlash
This incident has ignited extensive criticism, causing disruption in the budget session of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The dispute increased after local residents, political leaders and religious groups condemned the show, calling it “porn” and “inappropriate”.
In response to backlash, J&P Chief Minister Omar Abdullah distanced the government from the event, clarifying that it was a personal relationship that had no official participation.
Designers answer amid growing controversy
After the uproar, Shivan and Narash released an apology, stating that the show was to celebrate creativity and fashion rather than stopping any religious or cultural beliefs. However, his explanation has not reduced resentment, and even photographers who document the incident are now subject to legal investigation.
