Five Uruguay players were banned after a conflict with Columbia fans in a sport of Copa America in the United States, who appealed to the Supreme Court of Sports on Friday.
Players – in which Captain and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimanez, Liverpool carried forward Darwin Nunez and Barcelona defender Ronald Arujo, claimed that they were protecting their families after the semifinal damage of Uruguyu at Bank of America Stadium in Charlet, North Carolina.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said that the appeal was being heard by remote video link on Friday. No timetable was given for the decision.
Players, including Napoli defender Mathas Olivara and Tottenham Midfielder Rodrigo Betanakur, have been supported by the Uruguayan Soccer Federation to challenge the sanctions imposed by South American football body Conmebol.
Nunez was banned by a Conmbol disciplinary panel from five qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup, Betanakur for four and other players for three matches.
The football body said last July, “There is no place for intolerance and violence on the field.”
Nunez was fined $ 20,000, Bentankur $ 16,000 and Gimnez, Arujo and Olivara $ 12,000 each.
