Former Heseeman Trophy winner and first round NBA draft pickle is ready to become a male basketball coach at Charlie Ward Florida A&M, sources told ESPN.
Sources said that the ward rattlers is finalizing a deal to become coach. The school board is scheduled to have a meeting for ET at 3 pm on Wednesday, when there is an agenda item to approve a new men’s basketball coach contract.
The 54 -year -old Ward was the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner in the state of Florida and played in NBA from 1994 to 2005. He played mainly for New York Nix, but ended playing his career for both San Antonio Spider and Houston Rockets.
Ward brings a diverse resume of basketball coaching experience. He was an assistant coach with rockets for two sessions in 2005-06 and 2006-07 with a high school head coach and USA basketball in Talhasi.
He becomes the highest profile coach in an HBCU men’s program in the country, as he connects to Jackson State coach Mo Williams, as a coaching of former NBA players in Division I at HBCU.
Ward takes a challenging task, as Florida has not reached the NCAA tournament since A&M 2007 and has appeared in three tournaments in school history.
Famu went to 14โ17 under coach Patrick Crary in the last season, which left after a year. The final winning season of the school came in the NCAA tournament season of 2006-07. Five coaches have since worked there, who have worked without finding a way to achieve a winning record.
The ward will provide a blow for the program, as it is one of the biggest names in the region in the Talhasi-based school from his play and coaching career.
