New Delhi: Six people were crushed at a Hindu temple in India’s coastal state of Goa, officials said on Saturday, thousands of people gathered for a popular fire-moving ritual.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened by a tragic stampede at Larai Devi temple in Shiragao village in the early hours of Saturday morning”.
“Six people died before bringing the hospital to the hospital,” the sovent told reporters.
He visited the hospital and said that “all possible support” would be given to the families of the killed or injured.
Goa State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that “about 80” people were injured.
“Five are important and are on ventilator support, while the remaining is being treated in a specially created emergency ward,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office “expressed condolences to those who lost their loved ones”.
Larai Zatra is a major Hindu festival in Goa and is marked by a fire fighting ceremony.
Malignant stamps are notorious in Indian religious festivals.
Earlier this year, at least 30 people were killed in the morning crush at a Hindu mega-festival, Kumbh Mela in the northern city of Tragraz.
