Federal officials said Kasania Petrova of Harvard “deliberately broke the law” amid his ongoing shock to deport the Russian scientist.
Petrova, a biochemist at Kirschenar Lab at Harvard Medical School, was detained Boston Logan International Airport On 16 February when she returned from a trip to Paris.
His lawyer, Gregory Romanowski, told Fox News that Petrova was bringing a frog fetus back at a French laboratory request at the request of a professor, with which the Ivian League University was collaborating. According to Romanowski, the sample was picked up in Paris and they should have been brought to Harvard and Petrova was unaware that they needed to claim customs.
The Homeland Security Department (DHS) wrote in a post on X on Tuesday, “The person was detained after lying to federal officials about carrying substances in the country.” “One later K9 inspection was exposed to all the loose vials of unknown Petri dishes, unknown substances containers, and fetal frog cells without any proper permits.”

The Fedes said the messages found on the 30-year-old phone revealed that he planned to smuggle the material through customs without any declaration.
DHS alleged, “He deliberately broke the law and took deliberate steps to save it.”
Petrova’s lawyer has pushed back on the legend that it is said that failing to declare an item at customs is not sufficient to cancel his visa. Instead, the authorities should have been fined and the object should have been confiscated, he said.
“The CBP was authorized to seize the item and release the fine,” he said. “Instead, he chose to cancel and close Ms. Petrova’s visa.”

Romanovski said that caused reliable fear, and they were then seeking shelter to Petrova, who were first detained in Russia for anti-war protests after the attack on Ukraine.
He said, “She faces an immediate arrest due to her former political activism and opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” he said.

His lawyers were also challenging CBP’s works at the airport: Visa cancellation. A federal court hearing was scheduled in that case for June 9 in Vermont district, but the plan was to ask them to expedite the hearing.

“It is necessary to detain ice to individuals … only if they are a threat to flight risk or community. Ms. Petrova is neither,” Romanowski said. “His continuous detention is not a purpose and waste limited government resources.”
