For the first time in nearly three decades, no one other than Greg Popovich will be the head coach of San Antonio Spors.
On Friday, the NBA franchise announced promotion to Mich Johnson’s head coach.
It was decided shortly after that Popovich abandoned his head coaching duties and infected the full -time chairman of the team’s basketball operation.
Popovich has led the spurs basketball operation since 1994, which balances its executive role and coaching role for 29 years.

Johnson’s term with spurs extends for nine years. He joined the Spider G League aide in Austin, Texas in 2016. He has been a spurs assistant coach since 2019.
Johnson was also the coach of San Antonio in the NBA Summer League in 2022 and 2023. Johnson stepped for Popovich for 77 matches during the 2024–25 season, as the five-time NBA champion described the team as a light stroke.

Popovich said in a statement on Friday afternoon, “My love and passion for the game remain, I have decided that it is time to step as a head coach.” “I am always grateful to amazing players, coaches, employees and fans who allowed me to serve him as the head coach of the spurs and are excited to continue to continue to support the organization, community and city that are very meaningful for me.”

Johnson will be formally introduced at San Antonio on Monday.

“We are thrilled to be our next head coach for Mitch Johnson,” the managing partner of the spurs Peter J. Holt said. “During its decade in the organization, we have seen that Mich has the right price, poetry and ability to lead us in the future.”

Sprows star Victor Vembanyama said that when the season was over, he was confident that the organization would do the right thing.
“I trust the organization … and I also trust Mitch to grow in that role,” Vambanyama said. “So, I think we are in good hands.”
Johnson played at Stanford as a four -year starter before playing in G. League and Europe.
“I am really grateful and honored to get this incredible opportunity,” Johnson said. “I am thankful to coach pop, RC, Brian and Peter, who is trusting me to take me to our culture, and I promise to give the responsibility that I am proud of the fans of the spurs.”
