Members of the Executive Board of the International Press Institute (IPI) issued a joint statement on Thursday to express their solidarity with journalists and members of the media community around the world, who are oppressed, whether it is in the hands of government or powerful actors.
“We – prominent journalists, editors and publishers from 21 countries around the world – are united in our unwavering commitment to the principles of press freedom and indispensable role, which plays a free media free and supporting democratic societies,” the statement says.
Journalists writes that the media is an important tool in blaming powerful people, exposing government overrach and misconduct, and also protects fundamental rights and freedom.
“We are in an unprecedented moment of geopolitical instability and change. Dotiveism is increasing and the institutes of free society – including law and the rule of fundamental human rights principles – are subject to tremendous stress. At this time, the work that journalists and media do are more important than before,” it is further explained.
The organization was established 75 years ago during the time of global chaos, the Second World War was over and the black clouds of the Cold War were going on. It was established with the belief that press freedom and quality, fact-based journalism helps create a better, independent and more peaceful world.
According to the statement, the IPI has advocated at the forefront of journalism rights between political pressure, censorship and repression for more than seven decades.
“We have stood with reporters to report the truth from the back of Iron Curtain, who are fighting censorship in the apartheid-era South Africa, breaking the dictatorship in all corners of the world with reporters, and with those who put their lives at risk, the past and present are the truth of the wars,” it is said.
“Today, we stand in solidarity with our members and colleagues around the world, who continue to report as governments and other powerful actors, try to discredit, discredit or silence their work.
“Now it is time to stand together and strengthen the necessary task and protect them that journalists do. Without an independent media, there is no independent world.
