While marijuana has been legalized in many states, research has shown that it can have harmful health effects for some – including a high risk of heart attack.

According to a release by the American College of Cardiology (ACC), two recent studies have linked the use of cannabis to cardiac events, especially among young, healthy people.

One study included over 4.6 million people. The other was a major review, which saw 12 previous studies, including more than 75 million people, the largest joint study investigating the relationship between cannabis and heart attacks.

Researchers found that healthy cannabis users who were under 50 years of age were more than six times the possibility of a heart attack compared to those who did not use the substance.

They were also four times as the possibility of being a stroke, the possibility of experienceing heart failure twice and the possibility of dying of heart occur thrice.

The use of marijuana is associated with an increase in asthma risk in youth, studies say: ‘worrisome’ health implications

This risk was shown at the peak only one hour after the use of the cannabis in one of the studies.

All participants did not have a previous heart condition, notbacco users, healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and there was no history of diabetes.

“We know that smoking cigarette increases the risk of a heart attack, and it is appropriate to assume that smoking marijuana offers a similar risk.”

The study did not reveal how Marijuana compromises heart health, but researchers presented some possibilities.

They include that it can “affect the heart rhythm regulation, increase the demand for oxygen in the heart muscle, and contribute to endothelial dysfunction, making blood vessels difficult to relax and expand, and can disrupt blood flow,” the release said.

“At a policy level, a proper warning should be given so that people who are consuming cannabis know that there are risks.”

While Dalvari stated that the study is “interesting and related,” he also called more data on the subject.

“I recommend all my patients to quit smoking all substances, because we know that smoking increases the risk of cigarettes a heart, and it is advisable to assume that smoking marijuana presents a similar risk,” he said.

“It would be interesting to know if this study versus addresses the risks of ingestion of smoking. Nevertheless, I would advise patients to limit the use of cannabis until fixed studies are published.”
