Coach Mark Pope said on Saturday that Jackson Robinson, the team’s second leading scorer Kentaki guard, would perform surgery on his wrist and recall the rest of the season.
Robinson recalled four directly games with injuries in February, but it appeared to be a set to return against Oklahoma last Wednesday. He played only 12 minutes against Sooners before resumping the injury, and was dropped out of Saturday’s game against Obern.
The Pope announced the tigers to the Wildcats after a loss of 94–78.
He said, “We came to the final conclusion last night that he was going to do surgery, so he is going to the world expert to perform surgery on his wrist on Wednesday,” he said. “When he went down, we knew that he needed surgery, but he just wanted to play so badly. He started it again, and was an injection to try to make it functional, and then he was fixing it and then he went down in the first half in Oklahoma …
“There is no way that he is going to be able to play.”
It is a recovery of three months, the Pope said, which means Robinson’s college career is over.
Robinson, a 6 -foot -6 senior fifth year senior, chased the Pope in the last spring from BYU to Kentaki and started the first 23 games for Wildcats. He ends an average campaign of 13.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting about 38% from the 3-point range.
Robinson enjoyed a breakout season last year under the Pope, earning the Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year honor after an average of 14.2 points. He started his college career at Texas A&M before transferring to Arkansas, where he also failed to play a consistent role. He then shifted to BYU to play under the Pope and immediately started 30 games in his first campaign with Cougars.
Kentaki has struggled with injuries this season, especially on circumference. Ker Chris faced a fracture wrist in early December and has yet to play since undergoing surgery, while Lamont Butler missed time with a shoulder injury during the SEC game.
