Washington: Johns Hopkins University said on Thursday that it would reduce more than 2,000 jobs in the US and abroad after the end of $ 800 million in the grant to the famous educational institution by President Donald Trump.
It marked the largest pruning in the history of the university and included 1,975 posts outside the US in 247 domestic American workers and 44 countries for the educational institution.
Job cut affects the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, its medical school and non-profit, JHPIEGO affiliated to international health.
“This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $ 800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to do significant work here at Baltimor and internationally,” the university said in a statement shared with the media.
Since assuming office on January 20, Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk have attempted to destroy the American agency for international development.
The Trump administration has canceled more than 80% of all the programs at USAID after a review of six weeks, said by US State Secretary Marco Rubio on Monday.
Apart from attacks on the US foreign aid agency, the Trump administration is also investigating 60 US universities including Hopkins on protests at the campus.
