Smartphones are the center of our digital existence. Not just because they open doors for communication and social connections, but are also due to their role in our financial and professional life gatekeepers.

Needless to say, a theft iPhone can increase your life in many ways, but it is even more difficult to recover those precious files stored on the device. Some victims of iPhone theft may finally have a chance, thanks to a case against Apple, not giving enough help in recovery efforts.

According to the Washington Post, an iPhone theft victim named Michael Mathews has filed a legal case against the company in the US district court for the northern district of California. The plaintiff is demanding access to data of two terabytes with $ 5 million with $ 5 million with his “entire digital life, including his family,” with “with his family.

Minnesota Tech executive Mathews stole his iPhone in Arizona. The device not only had personal data, but also important information related to their tax filing and professional research. The theft iPhone was a major setback, which shut down his tech consulting firm.

The victim claims that despite concrete evidence of ownership, Apple has refused to reset his account recovery keys to get access to all their data. The court’s complaint claims, “In doing so, Apple ended and assisted hackers in his criminal activity.”

What happens when your iPhone is stolen?

For the events where an iPhone is incorrect or stolen, Apple suggests that users should immediately mark it as “Kho” when finding their dashboard. By doing this, the device with passcode will be automatically locked and all payment cards will be suspended and pass in the wallet app.

Apple also provides a device called the stolen device protection. It locks sensitive tasks such as looking at the face ID or fingerprint lock on the face password and banking card. It can also detect that the device is in an unfamiliar location, and accordingly blocks some tasks such as my tracking, finding the payment card, and reaching the password keche.

From the Apple account dashboard, users can also reset their passwords and update sensitive details such as reliable phone numbers, emails and recovery methods. Next, users can choose to wipe all the data stored on their lost iPhone from a distance. However, this is a permanent process, and the erased data cannot be recovered.

    What next?

Removing all data remotely is not an option that many users can bear, especially if it contains sensitive data related to work, legal or financial matters. And this is where it becomes complicated because Apple does not provide a universal method to achieve access to data on a lost device, until it was all backuping into the cloud.

“On what basis do you get to keep your users’ data and not to return it?” The lawyer argued in the case filed against Apple. The road ahead will not be easy. The assembly of evidence and its final legal review may take up to eight months, followed by a court order seeking compliance with Apple.

But even the above security fails if the victim does not take action quickly. A thief who has taken a glimpse on your passcode can move forward and disable the safety measures that are to introduce Apple. This includes changing the email address attached to an account and changing the recovery details, essentially locking the owner out of his device.

This is more or less the end of the road. “If you lose your recovery key and cannot reach any one of your reliable devices, you will be permanently locked from your account,” says Apple. All the data stored in the cloud is still there, but according to experts, Apple simply opt for not returning it to the right owner whose iPhone was stolen.

    a new Hope?

Another problem is that not all iPhone users are aware of the facilities such as stolen devices security and advanced data security. The latter, for example, encryps all data stored on iCloud. This includes your device backup, messages, notes, photos, reminders, safari bookmarks and voice memos.

It is an end-to-end encryption that we are talking about, which means that Apple also cannot access it. Therefore, if it is capable, and your device is stolen, the only way to recover it is that finding stolen devices or bad actors can change any sensitive account.

It is a race against time, and a clever thief.

In addition to lack of adequate digital awareness, Apple’s self-declared privacy-first approach often hinders recovery efforts for real victims. The only reliable route is through the participation of local law enforcement officers or a long court fight.

Many people cannot either raise the route, but the latest lawsuit may be a glimpse of hope. John Brair, a lawyer who is fighting a court case against Apple, has allegedly chosen about a dozen other customers to deal with a similar situation. It will be interesting to see if the Apple only agrees to help them all, or better yet, the iPhone creates a more strong system to help the stolen victims.
