Iowa has hired Drake’s Ben McColm as her next male basketball coach, the school on Monday.
McColm finished her first season in Drake, leading to a record of 31–4 and the first appearance of the program in 32 rounds of the NCAA tournament since 1971. He won the regular session and tournament title of the Missouri Valley Conference before defeating the 6-Sid Missouri in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Drake lost to Texas Tech in the second round on Saturday.
McColm won the Missouri Valley Coach of the Year honor and was named the semi -finalist for the Nismith Coach of the Year Award.
McColm, a native of Iowa City, replaced Frank McCafree, which was rejected by Iowa as the head coach of the hockey after 15 seasons earlier this month. He was the all -time win leader of the school with 197 and led the program to perform the seven NCAA tournaments.
Iowa has not moved forward in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament since 1999.
Before taking over in Drake, McColm Division II Northwest Missouri was one of the most successful college basketball coaches in the country. He led bearcats for four divisions II National Championships and 394-91 records during his 15 sessions.
Under McColm, the Northwest Missouri State won 11 direct Miaa regular-season titles to terminate its tenure (and total 12). Before he was named Head Coach, the event won only four Miaa titles in the last 62 sessions. In 2018-19, Bayercats were ahead 38–0 and there was only one loss in both 2016-17 and 2019-20 sessions.
