Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder president and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has confirmed that he directed senior party leader Azam Swati to start a conversation with the military establishment.
Speaking to party leaders and lawyers during a meeting in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, Imran stressed that the outreach was not related to his legal matters, but was only for the sake of Pakistan.
According to informed sources, Imran told his visitors that he had never closed the door on dialogue with establishment. However, he clarified that his party had discontinued talks with the present government, which he had described as a lack of any real right.
People met the founder of PTI included PTI president Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Senator Ali Zafar and lawyers Zaheer Abbas, Mubashar Avan and Ali Imran.
During the meeting, Senator Zafar sought Imran’s response to Swati’s recent video statement.
In the video, Swati revealed that Imran had instructed him to join the establishment keeping the nature of confidential discussion. Swati said that although Imran was publicly important of military leadership, efforts were underway behind the curtain to restore the dialogue.
In response, Imran reiterated that the dialogue initiative was not about the search for personal favor or legal generosity. “This is about respecting Pakistan, democracy, law rule and people’s mandate,” Imran was said.
He said that he is committed to fighting his legal battle in court and will not give relief from any back door. Imran once again emphasized that when he refused to negotiate with the government, he is open to association with the military establishment.
