Gervonta “Tank” Davis ran away with a majority draw against Lamont Roach Junior to maintain his WBA lightweight title. Davis-which is recognized as a boxing face with Kennelo Alverez-abandoned the belt in a difficult-to-approved battle with a rival, which he was expected to be defeated. Davis (30–0-1, 28 KO) was unable to win in a performance, surprising fans whether the “tank” could be slightly overrated.
Nevertheless, Davis took place on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, which despite taking a hit on Saturday night remained undefeated. Some of the biggest names in boxing have a fight or two which are close to anticipated. After all, the bad taste from the night will rinse itself and will questions about what is next for one of the biggest stars in boxing.
First and most important: Should Davis give Roach immediate rematch?
it is In fact difficult. Right now, everyone who was watching the battle will agree that Roach is eligible to take another shot in Davis as soon as possible. Roach performed very above expectations and the prevailing idea is that his style gave Davis problems. After the fight, Davis said he would welcome Remach with Roach. However, it was not optimistic at the news conference after the Davis fight.
“(Remach with Roach) probably not this year,” said Davis. “This is definitely the fight I want ahead but it is not going to be ahead.”
There will not be many to take Roach as a favorite title in a possible rematch. Instead, more blame will be given on Davis to be mildly carried. The hope in Remach is that the order will be restored, and the “tank” would handle the business, as expected in the first battle. While some would say that Roach was looted, the reality was that it was a close fight. The fight was reminiscent of the first battle of Floid Mayweather with Jose Louis Castillo in 2002 when many people thought that Castilo did enough to hand over the “beautiful boy” to the first loss of his career. Mayweather ran away with a decision win and won by hand when the rematch was set by seven months.
The difference is that Mayweather was still growing while the “tank” is already a certified star. Davis will not achieve much to separate from applying your mind in a rematch. Roach is not a very big star and financial reverse will be limited. As long as Davis is not obsessed to correct the mistakes of the fight, the “tank” will probably think of rematch and pursue other options.
So, who fights next?
Shakur is a clear performance with Stevenson that will be a major battle between an aggressive dynamo and a defensive specialist. However, Stevenson was now aligned with the Matterum boxing of Eddie Hern and the power broker of boxing Turkey Allashikh, working with the chairman of the general entertainment authority of Saudi Arabia, makes it difficult to fight. Davis has not created the words that he feels likely to work with Allashikh, which looks best for a possible battle with Stevenson. The same can be said for the 140 -pound champion Tefimo Lopez Junior, which is part of the May 2 tripleheader at Times Square with Dewin Honey and Ryan Garcia.
It does not leave Davis with a lot of options in 140 pounds under the Premier Boxing Champions banner. He could pursue a world title against WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Alberto Puelo, who defeated Sander Martin on the undercard. But “tank” may be less interested in “tank”, raising the world title in 140 pounds compared to Remach with Roach. While a battle with top rank Keshen Davis to unite the belt in 135 pounds will appeal for staunch boxing fans, WBO Lightweight Champion is still constructing a domestic name and the casual fighting is not recognizable for the fan. It is unlikely that a battle with Vasili Lomchenko will be physically, either, because Lomchanco is considering retirement. But in the battle of Davis-Lomchenko, there is an important amount of cash, which should decide to take another 37-year-old battle.
There are no clear options for the next Battle of Davis. As long as he does not reduce his guard and plays the ball with Allashikh, he will probably not find a high-profile rival that will give him a big fighting purse than the Roach Remach. He can take a low name, but the fighting fans are restless with Davis, who are not facing the best fighters between 135 and 140 pounds.
The reality is that Davis’s name carries sufficient weight to sell Arenas (19,250 in appearance on Saturday) and draws in solid PPV numbers without a high-profile rival. He wants the last rematch with Roach because the draw is a serpent on him.
But let’s see how he feels next month.
