    Hugh Hefner launched Playboy magazine 70 years ago this year. The first issue consisted of a naked picture of Marilyn Munro, which he bought and published without his knowledge or consent.

    Hefner created a Playboy brand from the back of countless women depicted in his pages, whose beauty and the beauty and performance of enlarged female sexuality entertained their readers for generations.

    Hefner and Playboy’s relationship with women has been complex. But most women painted in Playboy fit within a narrow beauty standard-white, white, competent and blonde.

    The statement announced that the brand was no longer affiliated to the Hefner family and would be focusing on aspects of the company’s legacy that lines with values ​​of sex positivity and free expression.

    Today, Playboy is a very different company of a Hefner launched about 70 years ago. About 80% of Playboy Staff identify as women, according to the company, and its motto has turned from “entertainment for men” to “Anand for all”. Shares in the company trading publicly and 40% of its board and management are women.

    The company has also moved towards more manufacturer -led material through its app, Playboy Centerfold. Similar to the subscription content service only, Playboy Centerfold Subscribers allowed to see and interact with their creators, which he calls “Bannij”.

    “The Girls Next Door” was launched in 2004. The show was focused on Hafner’s life of three girlfriends, Madison, Markvard and Center Wilkinson. It became E’s best performing show and cultivated a new female audience for Playboy.

    “The Girls Next Door” was the story of complex empowerment despite patriarchal intervention. Its three female heroes were completely known as Hafner’s many fair girlfriends, for celebrities in themselves.

    They were eventually broken with Hefner, leaving the mansion and going to lead a successful career.

    Perhaps attracted so many female fans to the show, perhaps as strong, fun and complex individuals as a portrayal of the shows of Madison, Markvard and Wilkinson, who expressed happiness and agency through expressing their sexuality. However, amidst the girls fight for the agency, Hefner retaliated.

    The series shows that they finalized in every playboy photo of girls, as well as implemented strict curfew and expenses allowance.

    The fan interest in “The Girls Next Door” remains strong. In August 2022, Madison and Markvard launched their podcast “Girls Next Level”, where they interview the previous playmets and interact with fans. They also remember the episode from their own perspectives, unpacking their experiences of working in the show.

    After reaching 10 million downloads by February 2023, Podcast’s success – 14 years after the last episode of “The Girls Next Door” – speaks for the cultural heritage of the Playboy brand. It also shows that despite the note of Hefner’s original editor, Playboy resonates with some women.

    Playboy is now in a post-hifner era, where the imagination of women found within the old issues of Playboy can serve as an inspiration to enjoy her sexuality for others. Whatever the future for the company, the concept of Playboy has become a public property – it is that in the presence of Playboy -bunny costumes, each Halloween, Chik Playboy logo tattoo or branded lingerie and popularity of clothing.
