Greenland’s Center-Don Democratit Party won a surprising victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, excluding Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute AD’s party, Inuit Atakatigit, out of power. Independence from Denmark became a focal point of election amidst frequent talks under US control by President Donald Trump.
According to Reuters, Democratit leader Jens-Frederick Nielsen said, “People want change … we want more business to provide finance to our welfare.” The outlet stated that Nielsen said Greenland would prefer to “do not want freedom tomorrow” and to be separated from Denmark on “good foundation”.

Greenland’s opposition party pushed American relations closely, Trump plays big in the election as freedom from Denmark.
Four of the five main parties on the ballot, including winning the first and second place, the Democratit Party and Nalerek, favor freedom from Denmark, but disagree to speed. Greenland, which has a population of about 57,000 people, currently operates as a semi-late region of the state of Denmark. However, Trump’s renewed interest in the island gave rise to conversation about separation from the Danish crown.
The Prime Minister ED, whose party failed to maintain control, said in a Facebook post that he respects the election results and the parties are ready to negotiate.
According to The Associated Press, Danish Defense Minister Trolls Lund Poleson congratulated the Democratit Party and said Greenlandic future would face “massive pressure” from Trump, which cited Danish Broadcasting Corporation Dr. Paleson allegedly stated that “the future of Greenland is based on what Greenlandic people and the government want.”
According to The Associated Press, the Democratite party witnessed a major increase in support, winning about 30% of the votes compared to just 9%, which cited the Greenlandic Broadcasting Corporation KNR TV.

Greenland rejects Trump’s ambitions in the address of Panama Congress.
Earlier this month, Trump brought Greenland in his address in a joint session of the Congress.
Trump said, “We strongly support your right to determine our own future, and if you choose, we welcome you to the United States,” Trump said, by removing laughter from the crowd. “We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we are working with everyone involved to try and achieve it … a way or another, we’re going to get it.”
In the same address, Trump vowed that America would “take Greenland to heights as you had never thought before.”

During the January 1 phone call with Trump, Danish Prime Minister Metet Fredericsen stated that Greenland should be allowed to make decisions about their future. The two Prime Ministers Fredericseen and EDEE told Trump that “Greenland is not for sale,” Exios told at that time.
In December 2024, the then Presidential Election Trump tapped Kane Hovi as an US ambassador to Denmark. Trump said in a post on the truth that Social announced the pick that “the United States feels that Greenland’s ownership and control is a full need.”
