Gujarat’s Titan player Glenn Philips has been dropped from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on 6 April due to injury while playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Titans said in a statement, “Kiwi all -rounder, who has returned home, suffered a back injury during the IPL competition against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 6 April.” He was a substitute fielding guard in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Waist injuries are quite common among cricketers. The interior thigh area in the waist region includes many muscles, tendons and ligaments, and these structures may be stressful or torn due to overweight, poor warm-ups or sudden movements.
Fast bowlers and fielders are at risk due to explosive movements, especially in their roles.
For example, during diving, running between wickets, or a good magic bowling, a cricketer can pull the waist muscles too much, leading to pain, swelling and limited movement. Sometimes, the injury can be minor and can heal with rest and physiotherapy, but in severe cases, it can perform muscle tears or even surgery.
Symptoms typically cause severe or dull pain in the internal thigh or lower abdomen, stiffness, difficulty in lifting the leg, and discomfort when running or changing the direction.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the groin strain is classified based on the range of muscle damage, and treatment involves resting, stretching, and gradual strong to restore complete tasks.
Cricketers such as professional athletes can undergo more intensive rehabilitation programs including physiotherapy, core stability work and sports-specific drills.
Recovery time for back stress varies depending on the range of stress. Light strains (grade 1), where the muscles are stretched, but do not break, usually recover within 1 to 2 weeks with adequate rest, ice and physical therapy. Medium strains (grade 2), where there are partial muscle tears, may take 3 to 6 weeks. Severe injuries (grade 3), in which tendon or muscle breaks, may require 2 to 3 months or more, usually with surgery and formal rehabilitation.
Treatment usually includes pain relievers and physiotherapy along with rest, ice, compression and height (rice). For professional cricketers, injury management includes exercises, core stabilization and a gradual return-to-play scheme to prevent recurrence.
