Delta air lines Aerospace is partnership with Jetzero to introduce a revolutionary aircraft design that has the ability to change the future of commercial flight.
This new design, called a mixed wing body (BWB) aircraft, varies dramatically from traditional tube-and-wing aircraft in service.
Mixing the wings and torso in a single, wide, flat shape, reduces the BWB drag and weight, resulting in a fuel efficiency of up to 50% in fuel efficiency compared to today’s aircraft.

Mixed wing body aircraft (Jetzero)
Driving towards net-zero emission by 2050
The mixed wing body (BWB) represents an important component of delta’s strategy to thwart the aviation, supporting its fuel efficiency advantage directly support the 2050 net-zero target of the airline. By taking advantage of the existing engine technology, the design is avoided by the delay associated with developing new propulsion systems, able to adopt rapidly in the fleet.
The aircraft capacity to transport more than 250 passengers, corresponds to medium -sized international jets in the range and broader body models, it is located as a practical solution to reduce emissions without compromising it. The current airport infrastructure addresses its noise, both engine placements and compatibility, addressing both environment and logical challenges, while integration with durable aviation fuel enhances its role in cutting lifestyle carbon emissions.
This versatile approach shows how the innovative airframe technology can intensify the change towards the industry’s cleaner travel.

Delta’s role: transform innovation into reality
The project is deeply included in the project with delta financial assistance. Through its permanent Skyz Lab, the airline is contributing to operating expertise to help the BWB aircraft commercially viable. This includes the maintenance of the aircraft in everyday airline service, the operation of the airport and the advice of other practical views.
Amelia Delaka, Chief Stability Officer of Delta, highlighted the importance of this cooperation, stating that working with Jetzero to develop a new airframe and passenger experience is an essential step towards pushing the airline industry’s fuel-saving and innovation targets forward.

Reconsider passenger experience
The interior of the BWB aircraft is being re -designed thinking to relax and increase access. The wider and flattering shape of the aircraft’s body allows for new cabin layout. The purpose of the delta is to provide a dedicated overhead bin location to each passenger, to make more accessible seating and create less crowded environments to less rows and less rows.
Additionally, engines will be placed on top of the aircraft, which is expected to reduce cabin noise and low noise pollution around the airports.

Supported by industry and government support
The partnership follows the receipt of a significant grant from the US Air Force in 2023, with a full -scale performance aircraft with the first flight plan for 2027. With collaboration with aerospace leaders such as Grant, Northrop Gramman and Scelted Composite, BWB reflects strong government and industry support for concept. The Delta is involved with Jetzero from 2021, providing valuable guidance about how to bring this technique to the market.

Need success technologies in aviation
Over the last 50 years, the aviation industry has earned an impressive advantage in fuel efficiency, improving about 80% through innovations such as winglets and lighter materials. Delta alone saved more than 40 million gallons in 2024 by optimizing operations and upgrading its fleet. Nevertheless, the industry admits that incremental improvements to suppress climate goals are inadequate. Techniques such as BWB aircraft are required to achieve significant cuts in emission and fuel consumption that demands future.
