    FAA contractor pleads guilty to spying for Iran

    A natural American citizen living in Great Falls, Virginia, on Wednesday convicted the Iranian government and intelligence officials in the US as a contractor for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) between 2017 and 2024.

    The Department of Justice (DOJ) said that 42 -year -old Abujar Rahmati convicted the Attorney General in the federal court for conspiring to work and work as an agent of the Iranian government in the US without a pre -notification.

    Rahmati was earlier from June 2009 to May 2010, a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) 1 Lieutenant. IRGC is a nominated terrorist group by the US government.

    Court documents show that at least from December 2017 to June 2024, Rahmati worked with Iranian intelligence operators and government officials in the US

    During that period, Rahmati met with Iranian intelligence in Iran, communicated with Iranian officials using a cover story to hide its conduct, got employment with FAA contractor with access to sensitive, non-public information about the US aviation sector, and provided open source and non-public material about the solar energy industry in the US.

    The DOJ said that Rahmati provided her services to Iran through a former colleague in August 2017, who was a senior Iranian government official who previously worked in the country’s intelligence and security ministry.

    DOJ said that Rahmati traveled to Iran four months later and met with intelligence operators and government officials. He also agreed to gather and provide Iranian officials along with information about the solar industry in America

    When he returned to America in early 2018, Rahmati obtained private and open sources related to the American solar industry, then provided him to the office of Iran’s Vice President for science and technology.

    Acting as an FAA contractor in the US, Rahmeiti downloaded at least 175 GB files, including the National Aerospace System (NAS), NAS airport monitoring radar system and sensitive access-controlled FAA documents related to radio frequency data, said DOJ.

    Rahmati stored the files on the removable media, which she took to Iran in April 2022 and, according to the DOJ, provided to government officials.

    He also provided additional information about solar energy, solar panels, FAA, US airports and US air traffic control towers to his brother living in Iran in April 2022, DOJ said, so his brother could provide files to the intelligence officials on behalf of Rahmati.

    Rahmati is to be sentenced on 26 August, and has to face a maximum of 10 years jail to act as an agent of a foreign government, and is sentenced to five years in jail for conspiracy.
