Discord is testing face scanning to verify the age of some users in the UK and Australia.
The social platform, stating that it has more than 200 million monthly users worldwide, was initially used by gamers, but now there are communities on many subjects including pornography.
Online security laws of the UK means that platforms with adult content will require “strong” age verification by July.
And social media expert Matt Navra told the BBC “It’s not one -band – this is the beginning of a big innings”.
“Regulators want real evidence, and facial identity can be the fastest route,” he said.
But campaigners have said that these types of checks are ineffective and can give rise to privacy issues.
“Age assurance is becoming a new seatbelt for the Internet,” said Mr. Navrara.
“Will it become an ideal in Britain? Honestly, yes, perhaps.”
He said that he believes that changes in online security laws mean that online platforms will complete their age verification processes.
He said, “Click here to confirm that you are 13.”
“Now age verification is wrong, and you don’t just lose users – you can lose a court battle or impose a fine.”
The firms who do not comply with the online security act can be fined up to 10% of their global business.

The face scan will be on the device and will not be collected, and according to the company, the ID upload will be removed after the verification is completed.
The materials that are flagged as sensitive are already blocked or blurred for adolescents.
‘No silver bullet’
The privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch says that the edge check technology should not be seen as a silver bullet solution “.
Senior advocacy officer Medelene Stone says they can pose a risk for users, “including safety violations, privacy infiltration, errors, digital exclusion and censorship”.
While the Industry Group The Edge Verification Providers Association says that “a wide range of convenient, privacy-protection methods” is “.
His executive director Ian Corbi told the BBC that the latest technology can estimate age “within 1-2 years based on a selfie or how you move your hands”.
But he also said that platforms have an option to use age verification.
He said, “They can completely remove the harmful materials, apply age check to reach the entire site, or check the age before allowing access to high -risk pages and positions,” he said.
Australia is planning to bring a social media ban for all under -16 this year.
Recent research found that more than 80% of the Australian children between the ages of eight to 12 use social media or messaging services that are only for more.
