With stars such as Danzel Washington and Jake Gicinhal, perhaps it’s no wonder “Othello” became the highest -grossing broadway play by pulling in $ 2.8 million in just a single week.

Washington said, “It is most excited that I have been in this century. Seriously. I am not excited about what I have done as I am about it.”

Something is coming from Washington. Known for roles in films like “Glory” and “Training Day” (both won him Oscars), he is called the biggest actor of the 21st century. But before you call him “Hollywood actor”, be careful.

“What is the definition of Hollywood actor?” He said. “I am from Mount Vernon, so I am a ‘Mount Vernon actor.” I do not know what ‘Hollywood’ means. ,

“Is someone who is famous in the film? A film actor, big success on film?”

Washington said, “I am a platform actor who does the film; this is not another way.” “I had a platform first. I learned how to act on stage, not on the film. Films are a medium of a filmmaker. You shoot it, and then you have gone and they cut together and add music and do all that. Theater is an actor’s medium. The verse goes up, no one can help you.”

Jake Glennhal and Denzel Washington now in the production of “Othello” on Broadway.

    CBS News

“Othello” is the sixth broadway show of Tony-Vajeta. He plays the title character, Othello, the military commander shook a deadly anger after his encene, Iyago, assuring him that his wife Desdeemona has become unfaithful.

Jake Gicinhal played the role of a fraud Iyago, who wants to take revenge on his long -time Comrade and Commander as he was passed for a promotion.

Shakespeare wrote “Othello” around 1604. But this production sets the play in “The Close Future”, which connects modern themes such as service members suffering from PTSD.

Washington said, “People, you know, they usually think, ‘Oh, yes, it’s about jealousy. And he cheats on him.” No, it is about two soldiers who trust each other with their lives.

    “Well, Then… “Gheenhal laughed.

“Yes, what are you doing? Washington laughed.

“What do you know, you know!” Gyllenhaal replied. “But I mean that what is shared is their, you know? And it is shared beyond what they will share with others. This is what makes their bond so strong.”

At the age of 44, Gilenhal is widely observed for emotional range and intensity, which he brings into roles, in films like “Brockback Mountain,” Zodiac Chakra “and” Nightkaralar “. And like Washington, he is the veteran of a theater, in which “Othello” marks his fourth appearance on the broadway. But this is his first time to demonstrate Shakespeare (almost). “You know what I realized? I ‘did a lot about nothing’ in high school ‘,” he said. “And I realized that this morning.”

    “You forgot“Laughed a surprised Washington.

“Perhaps the audience and I would probably like to forget!”

We visited Gilenhal before a performance last week at Barrymore Theater. Standing on the stage, the actor said, “This is my favorite place.”

He explained that his character left the audience: “(where) he has a conversation with the audience, they become their companions in it, and every night it is different. And that is what I love it very much.”

Washington, now 70, has no stranger for Shakespeare. On stage he played the roles of Richard III and Julius Caesar, and he has acted in the film versions of “much not up” and is a conversion of “Macbeth”. He first played Othello as a student at Fordham University in New York City.

Asked that he is different from the drama and its language when he is 22 years old, Washington replied, “I know very little now. I thought I know everything! I didn’t really like the part,” because I was not enough to understand it.

“Othello” has been staged more than 20 times on Broadway. For most of those demonstrations, Othello was played by a white actor in Blackfase. It turned in 1943, when Paul Robson gave a great performance in the role. The last actor to play on Broadway was James Earl Jones in 1982.

Washington said, “When I was in college, James Earl Jones was my northern star.” “That was what I wanted to be. I did not get to see his Othello, but I know it was not good as my 22 -year -old interpretation! But you know it’s my turn.”

And what is it turning. The show is already a box office hit. But Record-breaking sales have inspired prices from the skyThe prime seats go for approximately $ 1,000, causing some criticism.

But the audience is visible, and enjoying themselves with its voice – as stars.

Gyllenhaal said, “You reach a point where you like,” Oh, I have worked on my entire career for this moment. ” ,

Washington said, “That’s it seems to me too.” “I worked my whole career for this moment. It is a 48 -year journey for me. It is very young for the part, and some can now say very old. But 48 years of experience, so 48 years of pain and joy and life have noticed my attitude to play a role.”

Grenhal said, “I feel tremendous. And when I walk in that rehearsal room every day, he feels me.”
