A strange case in Greater Noida of Delhi NCR has shocked everyone. According to reports, a woman living in Greater Noida succumbed with rabies after contracting the infection through cow’s milk. Reports states that the cow had rabies after biting by a stray dog.
While some people in the nearby area demanded rabies vaccination, the woman did not take precaution. He developed symptoms a few days after consuming milk. News18 said, “In a frustrated attempt to save her, family members took her to several hospitals, but she was repeatedly away. Finally, the doctors of the district hospital advised her to take her home. He died shortly after.”
Can rabies spread with milk?
A report from ICAR states, “Milk milk (cows and buffaloes) milk contains rabies virus. If such milk is consumed without boiling, there is a risk,” a report of ICAR says. The report classifies the “individual milk drinking person” as category 1 based on the risk of rabies. Other incidents placed under this category are licking by an infected animal, licking on the mucous membrane -mouth, nose, anus, genitalia and conjunctiva and are being cut without blood. “Classification of patients according to the nature of cutting is very important. Decision for treatment, post bite AR vaccination and administration of immunoglobulin are decided on classification. Depending on seriousness, patients are classified into three categories.
“The rabies virus infects the brain. Once the rabies virus reaches the brain and starts showing symptoms, the infection at this stage is almost untreated and usually fatal within days and death results,” Ikara says.
Rabies symptoms
Rabies is a malignant viral infection that affects the nervous system, usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Symptoms may take months to months to appear, but once they do so, the disease is almost always fatal.
In the beginning, rabies symptoms may look light and flu. An infected person may experience fever, headache, weakness and general discomfort. Some may feel itching, tingling or irritation near the bite wound, which is an early warning signal.
As the virus spreads in the brain, neurological symptoms appear. These include anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, aggression and difficulty swallowing. One of the most famous signs is hydrobia (fear of water), where there is pain in swallowing, causing excessive drooling. Some people develop paralysis or become extremely restless.
In the final stage, the infection leads to coma, respiratory failure and eventually death. Once symptoms appear, there is no cure for rabies, which is why immediate vaccination is important after cutting.
