The history of Gervonta “Tank” Davis begins slow which is caught on Saturday night.
Defense of Davis of its WBA Lightweight Championship against Lamont Roach Junior ended in a surprising majority draw at Brooklyn, Barclays Center in New York.
The two judges made the fight 114–114, while a third judge scored 115–113 runs in favor of Davis.
Davis (30–0-1, 28 kos) was a large-scale-200 betting favorite on ESPN Bet and was expected to stop rushing by many. Instead, Roach was standing in the line of fire, absorbed the hard-hitting davis he had introduced and responded with shots that shocked those not only in Davis but in appearance.
As expected, Davis landed for a slow start through the first half of the fight. Roach (25–2–1) took advantage, pressed the action and avoided being caught with the fight-end punch.
By the mid -round, Davis began to open his crime. But Roach grabbed his ground and caught the champion with counters and combinations.
In a unique scene, Davis succumbed unnecessarily in the ninth round. Referee Steve Wilks decided not to knock it, as Davis suggested that he had something in his eye. The battle started again, but the Nockdown could rotate the pendulum in favor of the roach.
Davis chased the knockout in the championship round, but Roach made landing, landing counters and body shots.
Neither the fighter was pleased with the result, the two later made a call for rematch.
