The fight over the participation of transgender athletes in youth games will come to California on Tuesday as state MPs debated two bills with the aim of keeping the sports teams to trans children and adolescents.
One of the proposals will reverse a 2013 law, allowing students to participate in a sex-different sports team, which align with their gender identity, regardless of the gender listed on their records. The second one will require a California Intercolastic Federation, the governing body for high school sports, to adopt the rules of banning students whose sex was assigned to male from participating in a girls school sports team at birth.
Republican-backed bills are expected to attract the crowd on the art, entertainment, sports and tourism hearing of the state assembly, where MPs in the Democrat-controlled Legislature will have to decide whether they should be carried forward. Orthodox political commentator Matt Walsh and a student-weekly who say a trans runner took his place on the Versity Cross Country team of his high school, which is scheduled to testify in support of the ban.
This hearing comes one day after the transgender day. Democratic village Gavin Newsom also comes even after weeks even after waves and angry party colleagues, when speaking on his podcast, he questioned the fairness of transgender athletes, who were participating in girls sports. Newsom has not directly asked the state’s law to be reversed and does not generally comment on pending laws.
Democratic Assembly Chris Ward, Chairman of the Committee who leads Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus, said he hoped the hearing “the hearing” will provide a balanced setting where both sides can present their arguments and attach to rational ideas. “
He said in a statement, “Whether these bills go ahead, I hope after Tuesday’s hearing, we can withdraw our attention in real life, suppress the issues affecting California every day-as the cost of staying more cheap-instead of the divisive culture to pursue wars,” he said in a statement.
Transgender women and girls in at least 24 states prevent women or girls from participating in sports competitions. Judges have temporarily blocked restrictions in Arizona, Idaho and Utah. In the New Hampshire and West Virginia, students banning those states were allowed to compete.
At the federal level, President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month, which aims to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls and women’s games.
Restrictions are part of a nationwide battle on transgender rights, some states have banned gender-suitable care and schools are required to share gender identity of students with parents without students’ consent.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon weighed the proposed ban of California. She sent a letter to Newsom last week, stating that her comment on her podcast attracted her attention and requested that she clarifies her stance and supports the bill that would reverse the 2013 law.
“Take a stand on your beliefs,” he wrote. “Be clear about the loss of gender confusion. Protect the female spaces. Do not encourage children to seek permanent medical intervention for their sex. Inform the parents.”
The US Education Department announced an inquiry in the State Education Department last week, which the school districts inform the parents to ban a law for the need of teachers and employees whether the student changes his gender identity in the school.
