Amazon has become a third tech veteran in several months to declare success in quantum computing – a technique that promises vast processing power, but is surrounded by technical difficulties.
The firm has unveiled a prototype chip Ocelot manufactured on the “CAT Quit” technique – an approach that achieves its name from the famous “Cat of Shrodinger” idea.
The chip wants to address one of the largest stumbles for the development of quantum computers – causing them to free the error.
Amazon says, with other recent successes in the industry, its work means that the useful quantum computer already thought with us.
But how quickly these machines will be powerful, which will be powerful enough to be practically useful for a series of professional applications, is a matter of debate among experts.
The Oscar Painter of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for quantum computing at California Institute of Technology, where was worked, told the BBC that recently progressed was the “aggressive date” of a decade, which looked more realistic “now”.
“Five years ago I might have said 20 or 30 years”, he said, but “this timeline is quite short.”
Finally AWS, which provides cloud computing services, wants to provide quantum computing services to its customers, but Mr. Painter also said that he believes that advanced machines can eventually help customize the huge global logistics of Amazon’s retail trade.
“You know, a company like Amazon, you make one percent improvement in it and you are doing big dollars right? Quantum computer to you more effectively, more real time – and it is the real value,” he explained.
What is a cat QBIT?
Quantum computers solve problems by exploiting the strange properties of substances and energy on very small scales, as described by the science of quantum physics.
Quantum computers will not replace the so -called “classical” computers, but promise to be able to solve problems, even the most powerful modern computers cannot do – new discoveries such as better batteries and new drugs.
But this capacity is being organized with the problem of errors.
Quantum computers are extremely sensitive to noise in their environment – vibration, heat, electromagnetic intervention from mobile phones and WiFi networks, or even cosmic rays and radiation from the outer location can cause errors to make errors, which then need to correct.

Kat Cubits is an attempt to solve this problem that is in the design of the qubeks used by engineering error resistance.
Qubetes are the basic elements of quantum computer, most of us use equal to bits in computer today.
Cat Qubetes is nominated in honor of Irwin Shrodinger, whose CAT-in-A-Box question helped to illuminate some thinking behind Quantum theory in 1935.
Heroic New chip believesOf the total 14 major components that are only five cat quits, compared to current approaches can reduce the cost of correcting quantum errors by 90%.
The technique of CAT Qubetes is not exclusive to Amazon, named a French company. Alice & Bob He did a leading work on technology and continued to develop technology.
Maizyar Mirrahimi, Director of Research at the French National Technology Research Institute, said OCELOT “Hardware-skilled mistake-torew was an important step towards quantum computation”.
Amazon believes that the new chip provides a route to scale more powerful machines with this type of error proofing, but researchers believe that there are many further challenges.
The director of Michael Kathabert of the UK National Quantum Computing Center welcomed the progress that Amazon, but the BBC said that it can be seen the impact that will be at the speed with which the industry is able to develop a really useful quantum computer:
“Error correction is an important step in the long -term development of quantum computing. It is an important step that converts quantum computing into a practical and commercial equipment that we can use to solve complex problems in chemistry, material science, medicine and energy.”
“A part of the challenge is how to skill revolutionary technology efficiently – mechanisms that enable error improvement without huge overheads in chip size, energy consumption and system complexity, really welcome.”
Amazon researchers have published their findings in a research paper in scientific magazine Nature
pivot point
Amazon joined Microsoft and Google in the declaration of a new experimental chip. But is it the result of clever research or clever PR of announcements? Or is it a coincidence, said that the technology equal to buses always comes in the threes?
The Quantum computing industry as a research manager for the Heather West International Data Corporation follows the new chip by Amazon in advance of publication.
She describes the results of Amazon as “progress” rather than a success.
All three recent announcements have focused on reducing errors, and she tells me that the industry is “pivoting” by focusing on the number of qualities, to focus on “the ability to use these systems to” solve the problems of real world life “. And by doing this we need to be able to solve error correction within the quantum system “.
However, Mr. Painter agreed “100%” that it would not be easy to scale today’s practical systems.
