Although one of the controversial, at least controversial 2025 Oscar-nominated films, “Conclave,” was an Edward Burger-directed mystery thriller, starring Ralph Fianne, Isabella Roselini and Stanley Tuki, which brings political and religious traditions to the Catholic cardinal to choose a new Pope.
The Conclave would again gather in reality as the Vatican revealed that 88 -year -old Pope Francis, a Catholic Church leader, was passed on 21 April 2025, one day after Easter Sunday.
However, it was released in October 2024, “Conclave” hit a deep rage with the audience as Pope Francis’ falling health was known to the public in February 2025. Pope Francis fought with bilateral pneumonia in the months before his death.

The film closely follows the novel of the same name written by writer Robert Harris.
“It was quite accurate,” at the University of Ohio, Professor Emeritus Dennis Doyle told Fox News Digital.
Doyle taught for 40 years at Catholic Research University.
“There were some differences, such as some of the Latin were not accurate, the carpet was red in the film and its beige in real life,” said Dial. “The seating arrangement in the film was made very dramatically. They are not at all in real life. And even the way the voting was done was not the same.”

Despite creative freedom, Doyle realized that the film was “done very accurately.”
“I was surprised at how well it was and how they were able to present the characters in such a way that every character in a certain sense was sympathetic,” Doyle told Fox News Digital.
In the preparation of the film, Doyle read the book twice.
“In the book, the character was transgender, but did not go with the operation,” said Doyle. “In the film, the character was intersex, someone who was born in both ways, but still did not go with the operation.”
Some Catholics took it on social media when the film was released to follow it as “anti -Catholic” and “dishonesty”.
What is Papal Conclave: Inside the ancient process of choosing the next pope

“I thought everything in the film was very realistic till the very end,” said Doyle. “I thought, at the literal level, it was not really very realistic. I don’t think it would be that someone who had an interx would choose the Pope. But symbolically, I thought the end was very interesting.”
“I could see that the end could be a turnoff for some Catholics,” he said.
Doyle said that, while “distant Kauri”, the film spoke on the question of the role of women in the church and whether the Catholic church could be equal to men and women.
“In the film, all the people serving the cardinals are sisters,” said Doyle. “They are all nuns and in real life, in that building, there is just an employee who works in that building, and they will be people who will exclude food and who will change the bed and that kind of thing.”

Doyle said that the deep issue is that the film depicts men as leadership roles and women as servants.
“The conversation about transgender is relatively recently (in the church),” said Dial. “I really feel that the conversation is more in the United States and Europe, as it is globally in the Catholic Church or even necessary in Rome.”
The Vatican released an announcement in 2024 to Dinitas Infinita of the Vatican, where Pope Francis condemned the gender theory. The document said that an attempt to change a person’s unchanged penis is eventually an attempt to mislead the role of God.
“You can watch this entire film and it is not an issue in the film for the last two minutes. It does not really come out. What is going to be the conclusion, but the film is not about it.”
After the death of Pope Francis, Doyle believes that the newly released film will create interest in the Catholic Church.

“It can make people more aware that there is a lot of politics that moves forward and is an interesting topic in the film and in the book,” he said. “I don’t think it will really have any effect on how people think about the church, perhaps in general, it makes the ideal of the conclave interesting.”
“Conclave” was nominated for the nomination of the 2025 Academy Award, including the best pictures and the best actor, and won for the best customized screenplay.
