For decades, more than any other country has been a magnet for global research talent. The United States became the world’s science and technology power by funding students and researchers not only from within its boundaries, but from all over the world, studies, innovation, companies and to scale them. This is an environment that has created both landmark scientific achievements and science-mechanized prosperity. As the President of the US National Academy of Sciences, Marsia McTnut, he has seen (M. McNut Prock. Netal Acade. Science. USA 21E2321322120; 2023), It would be surprising if the United States does not win science Nobel in any year.

Many countries have tried to follow this model of science -led development, and to prevent the ‘brain drain’ of talent for better revived laboratories in the United States. Now, there is a danger of slowing down from American administration functions, if not stopping, that trend, because the country wants to devalue and attack scientific evidence in policy setting of structures supporting American knowledge ecosystems, including universities, libraries and museums.

More than 1,600 people responded Nature Polls at the time of publication of this editorial. Of these, some 1,200 said that they are scientists working in the United States and are considering leaving the country. Of the about 700 postgraduate students answering, some were considering leaving 550 (see (see Nature https://doi.org/pffc2025). The respondents were self-seductive and therefore not all American researchers may be representatives. But the result is a strong sign of disappointment that many scientific feeling in American science felt on the upheaval.

75% of American scientists responded NatureConsider leaving the pole

Many respondents of our pole quoted Europe and Canada as favorite sites. Some countries have lost very little time to advance themselves. One in Letter to the Research Commission of European Union13 ministers for research including research powerhouse in France and Germany, R Ekaterina Zahriva, urged the European Union to seize the moment by “welcoming luxurious talents from abroad, who may suffer from research intervention and sick-inspired and cruel money cut”. Partly in response, the European Research Council is planning to double the amount of funds to the grant that transferred to the European Union, Maximum € 2 million (US $ 2.2 million) for each,

The Netherlands government has asked its National Research-Finance Council to install a fund to attract top scientists who want to move forward due to the changing geopolitical climate. Universities in Belgium and France have advertised specific opportunities for American researchers.

This is a complex issue, and all the relatives should walk carefully and manage the expectations. For Canada and Europe, there is a clear opportunity to open doors for trained talented researchers in a highly successful culture of science, technology and entrepreneurship. At the same time, Europe also has some serious tasks to improve its processes for commercialization of innovation. Many researchers say that there is excessive regulation and bureaucracy, and a conservative attitude to take risks. Zaharaieva is conducting a European Union-wide innovation act. Among other things, it is designed to make private capital easier for researchers and new -intellectuals of the continent.

How Trump Project is following the radical roadmap of 2025, to define science

As Europe creates opportunities for American researchers, it should continue to show solidarity with all – undoubtedly a large proportion – which will not leave. Countries that have long belonged to the United States should strengthen them. This will not be easy, as the US government is assessing whether international research participation follows various executive orders. Navigating this will require creativity and leadership from researchers. American science institutions should be preserved as damage to the upheaval will have a long-term impact on the future of research and scholarship.

Researchers are leaving their homes to gain knowledge in other countries – and with it, to progress knowledge in those countries – centuries old. This is the story of science in many ways. For most of the time of the last century, the broader direction of the journey has been towards the United States, which began under the leadership of World War II. If it reverses, it would be a disaster for the United States, a shock for world science and one of the greatest acts of scientist self-loss would have seen by the modern world. We hope, in all honesty, that it is a moment in history that will pass, not a permanent change. There should be science, and will be, will be strong.
