James Gunn breaks silence on ‘The Batman Part II’ cancellation rumours

DC Studios is still working on making The Batman Part II a masterpiece amid several rumours about its fate.

In March, the release of the sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 DC superhero film was delayed by a full year—expected to hit theatres on October 2, 2026.

Additionally, there is still much ongoing chatter about whether it will even be released.

In a recent interview, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn shut down all the rumours about the franchise, confirming that the sequel is still in development.

“That’s the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It’s not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow,” the Superman director told Rolling Stone, referring to director Matt Reeves.

Gunn urged fans to “let [Reeves] take his time. Let him do what he’s doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.”

Gunn, 58, who took over DC Studios with Peter Safran in 2022, also hinted at DCU’s own upcoming Batman project, titled The Brave and the Bold.

“I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all,” he replied when asked if Reeves’ Batman could be folded into the larger DCU.

It is pertinent to mention that The Batman 2 exists within Reeves’s standalone Batman Epic Crime Saga and is unlikely to merge with James Gunn’s main DCU continuity.

“Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” Gunn told the outlet. “And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC.”

He continued, “Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be ‘Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,’ which he is.

Gunn also clarified that this new iteration won’t be a campy or comedic take.

“I’m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we’re dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it’s — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.”
