Washington: President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States is interacting with China on tariffs, expressing confidence that both sides could reach a deal to end the ongoing business dispute.
“Yes, we are talking to China,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office. “I would say that they have reached many times.”
Trump confirmed that the conversation took place as he increased the tariff on China to 145 percent, after Beijing responded to his comprehensive “liberation day” global levy.
But when Trump was asked if he had spoken directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he had, despite leaving several signs before.
“I have never said whether they have happened or not,” he said when asked about the conversation with Xi. “This is not appropriate.”
It was pressured by reporters whether Xi had reached him, Trump replied: “You think it was very clear that he has, but we will talk about that soon.”
Trump’s administration is entangled in a business war to increase mutual tariffs with the superpower rival China – a quarrel that has provoked global markets.
“I think we’re going to do a very good deal with China,” he said at the White House first, as Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni visited the European Union to negotiate with the aim of ending the American tariff on the European Union.
