After being out of a disappointing show in Australian Grand Prix and China, Liam Lawson was demoted to the racing bulls by Red Bull in front of the Japanese Grand Prix. Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda took his place as the second driver behind the Max Vastapane.
Lawson admitted that Demotion came as a “surprise” and was informed about it on a phone call on “Monday or Tuesday” just after the Chinese GP.
“It was more than a made deal,” he said.
He said that his location was likely to earn back, but looked serious about the possibility.
“Yes, I think it’s part of the conversation,” he told reporters in Suzuka. “In a way – it’s great, but I was already there.”
“Whatever happens is more or less out of my control,” Lawson said. “What I can control is driving accessories – and to prove that the future is at this point, I don’t think too much about it.”
Lawson said that one of the reasons behind his failure at the beginning of the season was that he was not familiar with the circuit. And he impressed the fact that before telling what he could do in Suzuka.
“I was more surprised about the sudden demotion,” he said. “This is very early in the season and I would say that I was expecting to go on a track that I had run before and there is an opportunity. For Yuki (who lives from Japan and is familiar with the Sujuka track), obviously it’s a great opportunity and on a track that he has done a lot.
