US President Donald Trump is urging senior advisors to take a more aggressive stance on tariffs as the administration prepares for a major growth in its global trade war, the Washington Post on Saturday cited four people familiar with the matter.
The report stated that despite calling from colleagues on Wall Street and Capital Hill, Trump has emphasized to broaden business functions with the aim of re -shaping the US economy.
Trump has continued to tell his advisors that he wants to increase business measures, and in recent times, he has brought back the idea of a universal tariff that will apply to most imports, no matter which country they come from, according to the report.
The White House did not immediately respond to the remarks request.
Trump expressed regret over not implementing the broad tariff during his first term and blamed the advisors for persuading them to pull them back, the post said, adding that it is not clear how seriously the idea of a universal tariff is being considered.
The President has told the advisors that the tariff is a win for the United States, which brings back manufacturing jobs and connects trillions to government revenue, according to the post.
Earlier on Friday, Trump said he was open to carve deals with countries wishing to escape from American tariffs, but those agreements would have to negotiate those agreements after announcing the mutual levy on 2 April.
