Washington: State Secretary Marco Rubio said on Monday that the United States was canceling 83% of the programs at USAID, as the Trump administration’s courage was not alliances with its “America First” agenda.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) distributes humanitarian aids worldwide with health and emergency programs in around 120 countries, and critics have warned that millions of people will be affected by reducing its work.
“After 6 weeks review, we are officially canceling 83% of the programs in USAID,” Rubio said on the social media platform X.
“5,200 contracts that have now been canceled, they spend tens of billions of dollars, who did not serve, and even in some cases damaged), the main national interest of the United States.”
President Donald Trump, who called for the closure of the Humanitarian Agency, signed an executive order in January, seeking a freeze on all US foreign aids to allow time to assess foreign expenses.
Rubio stated that the remaining 1,000 programs would be administered by the state department, which would give a deadly deadly blow to the USAID – where most of the workers have been on leave or fired since January.
Rubio thanked the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on Monday, which is a pioneer in a campaign for billionaire Elon Musk federal expenses and jobs.
Musk, which Rubio, allegedly criticized his aggressive belt-cut, replied on X that USAID cuts have been described as “difficult, but necessary”.
The State Department had last month announced the intention of cutting 92% of USAID contracts, identifying 5,800 grants.
Trump and his colleagues have argued that foreign aid is useless and does not serve American interests, but support groups argue that most of the aid supports American interests by promoting stability and health.
