The University of Connecticut won its fifth male basketball national title at the NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday night with a 76-59 win at San Diego State University.
Senior Guard Triston Newton led Uconn (31-8) with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while the last four most outstanding players Adama Sanogo, a junior forward, pasted with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
“We were not rank in the year, so there was a chip on our shoulder,” Uconn’s head coach Dan Hurley told the game broadcaster CBS. “We knew the level we could play through those dark times,” He said, referring to six defeats of the team in eight matches during the regular session.
He said that after going to the tournament, his group had increased confidence during the season.

Uconn entered the rare air as only sixth to win five NCAA men’s basketball championships to join UCLA (11), Kentaki (eight), Northern Carolina (six), Duke (five) and Indiana (five). All Uconn’s titles have been the most recent before Monday in 2014 since 1999.
Uconn’s women’s teams have won 11 basketball national titles.
